INFORMACJE DODATKOWE

The Study & Work Programme is a real opportunity for students, young or old, to upgrade their English skills not only in a class-room situation but in the everyday working environment, at the same time giving them the ability to earn money to subsidise their living expenses, this  helps the less well-off students to live while learning.

Citizens of the EU and Switzerland are allowed to take full-time positions in nearly all areas of business, trade or the service industry. Non-EU citizens are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week as long as they hold a student visa for six months or more and attend no less than 15 hours per week of lessons.

Working full-time, students can earn £180 - £200+ a week gross (EU citizens pay tax and claim this back in their home-country); this will cover all their expenses and accommodation. For students working in the hotel industry some hotels provide living facilities and meals.

Benefits of the Programme

The Two-week Language and Professional Training Course provides a good start to the students who are looking to both - broaden their English language skills and find a suitable job. We carefully consider each student’s knowledge of English,  his/hers personality and ability to communicate so we can best match the student’s skills to a suitable position, which at the end of the day, makes life away from home easier and far more pleasant. Unlike most of language schools, we give priority to the working students; that is why we provide morning, afternoon and evening classes (including Saturdays). Both the Cambridge and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exams can be taken at the University of Exeter, Foreign Language Department.

 WORK AND STUDY PACKAGES

Work

We have contact with 20 local employment agencies each of whom, specialise in different kinds of work. We have lists of local job centres, libraries etc where work is advertised. We can provide lists of au pair agencies We also give information on cultural differences and how to dress and approach potential employers and what to say to them. Lastly the English lessons focus on English for work and the most useful language that students will need.

Almost all our current students find jobs without our help so with professional help, advice and contacts, everyone should find a job.

However I should stress of course it can only really depend on the individual. If someone is "unemployable" in their own country, they will be “unemployable” here. However having said that you generally send educated, intelligent students so there should be no problem. We cannot guarantee work to anyone as we don't know them, their CV or what they want to do

An example of the jobs students may find are: Admin assistant, care assistant, carpenter, delivery driver, factory work, au-pair, builder, cleaner, IT, cook, leafleteer, painter, plumber, electrician, secretary, shop assistant, waiter, barperson and of course those who are more highly qualified may be able to find other jobs.

Accommodation

At the moment we have a small hostel where they can accommodate about 14 people. The hostel is part of a family house so you have the best of both worlds!  Max 3 people in a room (could be just 1 or 2). You  share all the facilities (kitchen, bathroom etc.). You also have a big dining room where you can watch TV and have a rest etc. All the rooms are cleaned but if you cook meals in the kitchen you have to do the washing up yourself. It is of course possible to book further weeks accommodation at the normal rates.

Work Registration

Once a job is started it is necessary to obtain a form from the Home Office, complete it and send off with a £50 fee. The form is 12 pages long and rather complicated. We provide the document, we complete it for the worker, we pay the fee and send it.

Bank Account

It is difficult to open a bank account in the UK, sometimes even for UK workers. It is more difficult if you have neither a job nor a national Insurance number. We can help by providing the necessary documents. The most useful document a student should have is a utility bill in their name. This will take some time to arrange so a bank statement from their own bank sent to their address in this country is also very useful.

National Insurance number

The office must be telephoned to make an appointment. Once an appointment is made, it is easy to obtain a NI number. Unfortunately they rarely answer the phone! Therefore we can do this time-consuming job for the student.

Travel Discount card

Travel is expensive. If you study for 15 hours a week for 14 weeks plus, we can obtain a travel discount card for the student which reduces the cost by 30%

Career and University Guidance

Personal attention provided by Mr Clive Wood MBA, PG.Dip, BA – a very experienced careers guidance counsellor from “Study in England” He has many links with UK institutions and 100% of his students finish their courses testifying to his experience and good advice.

There is also a computer suite where students have unlimited Internet access looking out on to a pleasant garden. All the main shops of George Street and Princes Street are only two minutes walk, and this exclusive area of Edinburgh is also close to many bars, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs.

In order to enjoy the attractions of Scotland and Edinburgh, EAC organises a regular programme of daytime, evening and weekend activities for students which include pub tours, Scottish dancing, sightseeing excursions, disco nights, guided walks, museum visits, and sports and film nights

LIVING IN EDINBURGH

Scotland is famous throughout the world for its unique culture and traditions, its breathtaking scenery and its warm welcome to all visitors. Edinburgh (population 470,000) is one of the most beautiful cities in the United Kingdom. It is full of history and culture, and as the capital city of Scotland is a thriving, dynamic, commercial city with excellent shops, restaurants, bars, galleries, parks and extensive entertainments and sports facilities.  Each August, Edinburgh is also the venue of one of the world’s largest international arts celebrations – the Edinburgh Festival.

All students for the first four weeks of their stay will be accommodated in EAC accommodation. This can be with a host family, or in a hotel or hostel if preferred.  All of our accommodation is carefully selected and all host families offer a safe and welcoming atmosphere in which to get to know the city and its people. The accommodation offered by our families, most of who have been with our organisation for many years, is excellent. The families are most welcoming which allows students to continue practicing English outside classroom hours, and also provides a valuable cultural insight into local customs and lifestyles, which serves as excellent preparation for the work placement or internship periods.
